Wahiawa General Hospital Volunteers are people who make a difference because of the role they play in meeting patients' needs or providing essential services and lending support to our hospital staff. Volunteers set an example for all of us . . . they work for the satisfaction of helping others.

How Do I Become a Volunteer?
v Applications are accepted year round.
v You must be at least 14 years old to join the Volunteer
Services Program and must be in good physical and mental health.
- Complete an application.
- Read and sign the Volunteer Agreement.
- Provide us with a current Tuberculosis Clearance (TB
Clearance) taken within the last six months.
v Upon review of all the appropriate documents, you will be
notified either by letter or phone call of the next scheduled General Volunteer

What Are the Minimum Requirements?
As a volunteer, you are required to provide a minimum commitment of 4 months with at least 8 hours per week. If a volunteer secures a job within the minimum required length of service, the volunteer agrees to continue volunteering for a minimum of 1 month (with hours and schedule to be discussed with Volunteer Coordinator). Students are required to volunteer for a minimum of 5 hours per week.
Do I Receive an Orientation to the Volunteer Program?
Yes, all volunteers are required to attend a 2-1/2 hour general orientation, which will cover the expectations of a Wahiawa General Hospital Volunteer. All volunteers will receive a handbook at the general orientation. The orientation includes education in the areas of safety (i.e. fire, electrical safety, hazardous waste, external disasters and infection control), HIPAA (Privacy Act) as well as volunteer expectations. If you are unable to attend the required orientation, alternative arrangements will be made on a case-by-case basis. All volunteers are required to complete and submit a Reinforcement Test. If you attend an Orientation session, a Reinforcement Test will be provided at the session. If you have made other arrangements with the Volunteer Coordinator, you may click on the link below to print your Reinforcement Test. This test is an open-book test. All answers may be found in the Volunteer Handbook provided at the Orientation you attend or by clicking on the link below. NOTE: The Volunteer Handbook file is very large and contains alot of graphics and may take a while to view.
If you are a Certified Nurse Aides (CNA) and are interested in volunteering in that area, you will be required to attend a separate patient care orientation provided by a registered nurse (RN). This comprehensive orientation is scheduled on a separate day for about 4–5 hours. Your CNA certification must be provided to the Volunteer Coordinator prior to any orientation session. Certification means you have completed both your education in the field as well as taking your certification exam. Upon passing, you will be issued a certification card showing an expiration date. Your certification is not your certificate/diploma from taking classes to be a Nurse's Aid.
When Can I Start?
Once all required documentation is received and you have attended the required Volunteer Orientation(s), you will be assigned to a department based on your expressed interests and availabilty. We try to have volunteers start the week following their orientation.
