Labor and Delivery

Arrival at The Birth Place
There are five LDRP rooms at The BirthPlace. An LDRP is a room that you will
be admitted to for labor, birth, recovery and your postpartum period. Your baby
will also be in your room from birth until discharge. If your baby requires more
attention, a nursery will be available.
The nurse will orient you to the room and review your records. Your vital
signs will be taken and you will be placed on a fetal monitor. The nurse may
perform other procedures such as blood work, IV therapy and exams.
Labor
During your labor, the nurse will coach you and try to make you as comfortable as possible. This may include assisting you in breathing techniques and positions, helping you to the shower or to the Jacuzzi, or administering medications. If needed, a nurse anesthetist will be available to administer Epidural anesthesia. Our nursing staff is flexible and accommodating and will assist and support you with your choices.
If complications or unforeseen events require changes to your
choices, you will be informed and involved as much as possible. Your health and
your baby's health are our main concern. Our nursing staff will consult regularly
with your doctor or certified nurse midwife regarding your labor status and progress.
Visitors
Because family bonding is very
important to us, visitors are allowed in the LDRP rooms. We recommend that
you decide during your pregnancy the number of people
you want present at your delivery, keep this number within reason. Siblings
of the new baby are welcome during labor and birth. However, they must be
accompanied
by an adult other than the father of the baby.
For the comfort of your family and friends, there is a waiting room available.
After Delivery
Immediately after the delivery, required vital signs and assessments will
be done. If you plan to breastfeed, we will assist you as needed. You will
have a tray of food to eat or your family can bring food from home or from
your favorite restaurant.
Early Discharge
Occasionally, our new moms want
to go home shortly after the delivery. This is an option if prior arrangements
have been made with the physician
or certified nurse midwife and both mom and baby are stable. The baby’s
doctor will then come into the room to examine and discharge baby. Before
being discharged, you will be scheduled to bring the baby back to the BirthPlace
for the necessary Newborn Hearing Screening test. Your baby will have blood
drawn for the required PKU. If you refuse this test (PKU) then you must
sign a Newborn Screening Test Refusal sheet prior to leaving the hospital.
Cesarean Birth
If your delivery is cesarean, planned or unplanned, you will have blood drawn for tests, your abdomen will be shaved, and an IV and a urinary catheter will be inserted. You will have either an epidural or general anesthesia. Your partner is allowed to stay with you during the delivery if you are awake (that is, when no general anesthesia is used). Sorry, no videos will be allowed in the operating room during a cesarean birth.
After baby is born, your partner will accompany the baby to the nursery, along with the pediatrician and the nurse. After the surgery you will be taken to the recovery room where you will be monitored. When your condition has stabilized, you will be taken to your postpartum room.
